Co-founded by CEO Gina Stewart, Ph.D., owner of Sage Technology Management, and COO Rob Howerton, owner of Howerton Landscaping, in 2008, Arctic develops novel, environmentally safe methods of weed control using non-toxic frost.
Gina Stewart comments that:
“Arctic, Inc. won an NC IDEA grant in December 2008, at a time when almost no venture deals were closing after the stock market crash that fall. We used the $25,000 grant to build an engineering model and to conduct our first field trial. I believe that having equipment and a small amount of data helped us win an SBIR Phase I grant from the National Science Foundation in 2010. The SBIR led to matching funds administered by the NC Board of Science and Technology.
NC IDEA’s crucial ‘first money in’ gives a vote of confidence to later investors, whether they are other granting agencies, angels, VCs or corporate partners. Creating an NC IDEA program for the Triad will stimulate entrepreneurial economic development.”

Founded in 2008 in an old sock mill in downtown Mebane by Stephen Fraser and Garth Davis — two Internet geeks who knew nothing about textiles but have crafty wives — Spoonflower gives individual designers the power to print and sell their own fabrics. Serving a community of over 150,000 individuals, the Spoonflower marketplace offers the largest collection of independent fabric designers in the world.
Although the company moved to a more modern, comfortable facility down the road in Durham in 2010, their Alamance County roots are strong.
“We truly are at the intersection of this historical textile and technology economy, and our position here has allowed us to start this great company. We could not have done this anywhere else.”
